Middle School ELA REACH

Grade 8

Odell High School Literacy Program (HSLP)

Odell Education

2025

The Odell Education High School Literacy Program (HSLP) provides 8th grade students in REACH ELA with research-aligned literacy experiences that integrate reading and writing with a focus on compelling topics and high quality texts.

Throughout the Odell Education HSLP, students explore a variety of classic and contemporary authors and texts to build knowledge about literacy skills and content. Students build knowledge by investigating a topic or anchor text through organized text sets in each unit. Text sets guide and focus student learning and knowledge development by examining a diverse body of authors, perspectives, and genres. While students develop strands of knowledge in units, they also extend their understanding across 4 units in grade 8 REACH ELA.

Middle School ELA Grade 8 REACH teachers will utilize the following 4 units from the Odell HSLP, listed below. To review the units, please see the Grade 9 Course Overview.

  • Photojournalism

  • Romeo & Juliet

iCivics Education

iCivics

2025

The iCivics US History Through Inquiry: Beginnings to 1877 course provides 7th and 8th grade students with research-aligned social studies experiences that integrate reading and writing with a focus on compelling topics and high quality texts.

iCivics engages students through an inquiry approach that deepens students' knowledge of content and disciplinary literacy skills. Students build knowledge by engaging in an inquiry arc that asks students a compelling question, with guiding and supporting questions that help them organize learning and use evidence to draw their own conclusions. Students grapple with compelling questions, authentic tasks, and explore carefully curated primary and secondary sources from diverse perspectives.
