Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship is the responsible, safe, and respectful use of technology, involving the protection of private information, mitigation of online risks, and the knowledgeable, respectful, and legal use of information and media. It encompasses the norms of appropriate behavior and recognizes the impact of technology use on oneself and others.

Internet Safety

Public Act 095-0869 (also referred to as the Illinois Internet Safety Act) states each school district must incorporate into the school curriculum a component on Internet Safety to be taught at least once each school year to students in grade 3 and above. Here at Elmhurst, we introduce Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety lessons beginning in Kindergarten. These lessons are created based on our approved district curriculum designed by Common Sense Media, a research based curriculum developed in partnership with Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Additionally, Public Act 102-0055 (also referred to as the Media Literacy Act) requires every public high school include in its curriculum a unit of instruction on media literacy, including instruction on how to access information, analyze and evaluate media messages, create media, reflect on media consumption, as well as the social responsibility of engaging with media of all forms.

Computer Literacy & Digital Literacy

There are also technical literacies for students and families to be aware of, including Computer Literacy and Digital Literacy. Public Act 101-0654 ensures all high school students engage in a unit covering computer literacy skills and requires districts to offer an Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science course.

Additional Resources

As a family, it is critical to set aside time on a regular basis to teach and model for children explicitly how to be an active, positive, and safe community member online. In addition to the Digital Citizenship  and Internet Safety materials shared on this page, below are a few additional resources.
